Jacques-Yves was born in Saint-Andre-de-Dubzac, France, to Daniel and Elizabeth Cousteau on June 11, 1910. Cousteau always loved the water and in his early teens, he became interested in machines. At the age of 11, Cousteau built a model crane and at 13, he built a battery-operated car. Also in his early teens, Cousteau became fascinated with films. He saved his money and bought a home movie camera.

In high school, Cousteau became bored with school and began to cause trouble. As a result, his parents sent him to a strict boarding school. Cousteau excelled in this new environment and upon graduation, he entered the Ecole Navale (Naval Academy) in Brest. In 1933, Cousteau joined the French Navy as a gunnery officer. It was during this time that he began his underwater explorations and began working on a breathing machine for longer dives.

In 1937, Cousteau married Simone Melchoir, and they had two sons, Jean-Michel and Phillipe. Two years after their marriage, Cousteau fought for the French in World War II. He spent time as a spy and was awarded several medals. During the war, Cousteau still found time to continue his underwater work. In 1943, he and French engineer Emile Gagnan perfected the aqualung, which allowed a diver to stay underwater for several hours. Divers used the aqualung to located and remove enemy mines after World War II.

Cousteau was named a capitaine de corvette of the French navy in 1948, and two years later he became president of the French Oceanographic Campaigns. That same year, Cousteau purchased the ship Calypso to further his explorations. To finance his trips and increase public awareness of his undersea investigations, Cousteau produced numerous films and published many books. His films include The Silent World (1956) and World Without Sun (1966). Both won Academy Awards for best documentary. His books include The Living Sea (1963), Dolphins (1975), and Jacques Cousteau: The Ocean World (1985).

Because of his many projects, Cousteau retired from the French navy. In 1957, he became director of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, founded the Underseas Research Group at Toulon, and headed the Conshelf Saturation Dive Program. The Conshelf program was an experiment in which men lived and worked underwater for extended periods of time.

In 1968, Cousteau was asked to make a TV series. For the next 8 years, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau introduced the public to a world of sharks, whales, dolphins, sunken treasure, and coral reefs. In 1974, Cousteau started the Cousteau Society to protect ocean life. The membership of this non-profit group has grown to include more than 300,000 members worldwide. Cousteau was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Reagan in 1985 and in 1989, he was honored by France with membership in the French Academy.

On January 11, 1996 the Calypso sank in Singapore harbor. In his last years, Cousteau was involved in a legal battle with his son, Jean-Michael over the use of the Cousteau name. Cousteau died on June 25, 1997.

SURGEON FISH

Surgeon fishes are medium-sized tropical fishes and common, easily recognized inhabitants of Galapagos reefs. There are three species in the islands, the yellow-tailed (Prionurus laticlavius, see below), which is the commonest, the purple (Acanthurus xanthopterus) and the goldrimmed (A. nigricans). In some places they are very abundant, with schools comprising hundreds. They are called surgeon fish on account of sharp spines protruding just in front of the tail, which are a defense against predators. These are as sharp as a surgeon's scalpel and they can cut through skin. Surgeon fish eat algae and small organisms growing on reefs. They move en masse, overwhelming smaller, less numerous inhabitants such as damselfish that guard small gardens of algae.

Palau is part of the Micronesia Island chain and is beautifully located just seven degrees north of the equator in the western Pacific Ocean. It lies 1000km (600 miles) east of the Philippines. The Palau islands include more than 200 islands, of which only eight are inhabited. With three exceptions, all of the islands are located within a single barrier reef and represent two geological formations. The largest are volcanic and rugged with interior jungle and large areas of grassed terraces. The Rock Islands are of limestone formation, while Kayangel, at the northenmost tip, is a classical coral atoll. This gives Palau some of the most favorable tropical weather on earth. Palau beckons to you with some of the world's most awesome natural wonders.

Micronesia has always been hailed as one of the premier dive destinations of the world. From large manta rays to tiny cleaner shrimp, the underwater world truly blossoms and comes alive in Palau.

JURASSIC SHARK 2

EXERCISE JURASSIC SHARK 2 will take place from 19 October - 07 November 2008. It will be a 3 week, 15 man Tri-Service expedition to tag Great White Sharks, Whale Sharks and Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks around Guadalupe and the Revillagigedo (Socorro) Islands, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. It is hoped that this work together with the associated publicity will assist in making this initiative a reality whilst drawing attention to the effect of shark finning and long lining.

Each species of shark will be tagged as a part of a specific project. The Great White Shark project will concentrate on establishing the movements of individual sharks around Guadalupe using both radio and satellite tags. Fundamental questions include whether different size sharks forage in the study area in the same way? Are they equally active during night and day? Do they return on a seasonal and/or annual basis to the same Sea Lion colony? Do they search for prey singly or in groups and do they converge periodically to scavenge on the remains from a successful predation?

Whale Sharks aggregate around the Revillagigedo Islands, observations indicate that these are invariably adult females and pregnant. The presence of pregnant females suggests that Whale Sharks use the deep waters of the southern area of the Gulf of California and Revillagigedo Islands as their primary nursery. Tags will be used to identify local vertical and regional horizontal scale movement of pregnant females around and off the Revillagigedos Islands. Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks were tagged off Cocos Island on Exercise Jurassic Shark. As a result we now know that sharks migrate between Cocos, Galapagos and Malpelo. This project will attempt to establish if the migration of these sharks extends as far as the Revillagigedo Islands.

The expedition will be carried out in co-operation with the Shark Research Institute (SRI), Centro De Investigaciones Biologicas del Noroeste, S.C. (CiB) and the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas (CICIMAR). One scientist from each organisation will accompany the expedition; each sponsoring one of the three shark tagging projects. The expedition will be based on the live-aboard boat, Sea Escape.

Expedition members must be members of the British Armed Forces, qualified to at least BSAC Dive Leader (or equivalent) and have a real interest in conservation of sharks. It should be noted that the use of re-breathers will be fundamental to this expedition (although re-breather training will not be required in order to gain a place). Further information will be posted on this website in due course.

Geographical Distribution
The tiger shark is found throughout the world's temperate and tropical waters, with the exception of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a wide-ranging species that is at home both in the open ocean as well as shallow coastal waters. Reports of individuals from as far north as Iceland and the United Kingdom have been confirmed but are probably a result of roaming sharks following the warmer Gulf Stream north across the Atlantic.

This butterfly fish is a common inshore species found throughout the Hawaiian islands and so far reported nowhere else. Easily identified by the crochet-like spots forming approximately 11 vertical rows from the pectoral to the anal fins. Recently divers have reported seeing this fish picking parasites off of other fishes. Grows to about 6".

Geography

Fiji consists of 332 islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean about 1,960 mi (3,152 km) from Sydney, Australia. About 110 of these islands are inhabited. The two largest are Viti Levu (4,109 sq mi; 10,642 sq km) and Vanua Levu (2,242 sq mi; 5,807 sq km).

there were many times when the sharks looked like they really were coming to get us, but they always turned away too soon, without getting quite close enough. They're not afraid, but they do seem to be wary.
